Doctor Sleep: Movie Review

By: Arniel Lucban

It may be a sequel no one asked for, but Doctor Sleep is quite a good flick, especially for fans of The Shining, one of Kubrick's masterpieces. The film starts off emphasizing a unique story, utilizing and explaining the mysterious details on the previous films. It is very interesting and entertaining at the same time. It also exhibited stunning cinematography and offers a lot of backdrops that are visually enticing.

However, one of the film's downside is the music. Despite the great score which puts you at the edge of your seat, there are noticeable scenes where I think, the suspenseful music was misplaced. Another is how this film paid homage to the first. I think it is unnecessary to do so and does not relate with anything on the current story, but this film was very detailed compared to the first which makes it more mysterious and haunting.

Ewan McGregor easily anchors the weight of the film. He just kept everything intact with his tremendous performance. Same with Rebecca Ferguson who was mesmerizing as cult leader Rose the Hat. Her presence alone was simply entrancing and made the audience chew their nails on their fingers highlighting Rose the Hat a villain to remember.

Overall, despite the fact that it is a tall task to create a sequel for such a classic, Doctor Sleep still managed to come up with a powerful chapter that injects the fear underneath your skin.
