Ad Astra Seeks Answers Among the Stars in a Thrilling Space Exploration

A sci-fi thriller set in the future, AD ASTRA stars Brad Pitt as an elite astronaut who travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet. His journey will uncover secrets that challenge the nature of human existence and our place in the cosmos.

Directed by James Gray (The Lost City of Z, The Immigrant), from a screenplay by Gray and his long-time associate Ethan Gross (“Fringe”), AD ASTRA also stars Academy Award® winner Tommy Lee Jones (Just Getting Started, Jason Bourne), Academy Award® nominee Ruth Negga (Loving, “Preacher”); Liv Tyler (The Lord of the Rings, Armageddon) and Donald Sutherland (The Hunger Games, Trust).

In AD ASTRA, a series of sudden disasters on Earth caused by radioactive bursts prompts a space odyssey for elite astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) to discover the root of the catastrophes. Part of his directives is the search for his long-lost father and legendary astronaut, H. Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), whom the U.S. intelligence believes to have survived the failed space mission - Project Lima. His journey takes him closer and closer to the truth as Roy uncovers the secrets behind Project Lima.

Putting storytelling at the forefront of the film, visionary director James Gray goes beyond the spectacle of the genre with thought-provoking and emotionally-resonant themes, as it takes its pensive hero on a journey of self-discovery.

“In retrospect, I think we were originally heading towards that dark night of the soul, where our character has to go to the furthest reaches of our solar system to find himself utterly alone, to not have anyone else to rely on, or any TV to distract, or any drugs to escape with. So, he’s really left having to confront the self - The self with all of its grief, all its buried pain and regrets,” said Brad Pitt.

Set against the vast and beautiful backdrop of space, the film promises to a stunning visual journey with Academy Award® nominated cinematographer, Hoyte Van Hoytema, creating one of the most realistic depictions of space in cinema.

AD ASTRA lands on Philippine theatres on September 20, 2019. Join the conversations online at #AdAstraPH.
