Banal: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Last night was the special advance screening for Banal at Trinoma in Quezon City and even with bad weather, fans braved the storm in order to support the cast. Honestly, I didn't expect much before watching the film and thought that it would just be another ordinary horror flick filled with jump scares. However, we were surprised and amazed with total outcome as it is not just a typical local horror movie.

Banal started slow but as soon it picks up the pace and injected the adrenaline, you will simply get entertained and hooked with it in an instant. There were a lot of creepy scenes that stood out and will grab your heart palpitate. The shooting location was indeed perfect, from the remote jungle to the dark caves, makes it realistic and even more terrifying. It is not a simple horror film as it provided a lot of innovative scenes that you won't usually experience in a local movie. We just see a few passable flaws in it, but it will not affect your overall experience.

Another thing to admire in this film is the incredible set of stars who are basically committed to make everything compelling. It is noticeable that you got a love team in Miguel Tanfelix and Bianca Umali, but the film didn't allow a romantic angle to spark between the two. They showed that they can work together and excel more even without a cheesy sub-plot. Andrea Brillantes is getting better each time and acts effortless with her performance. We really enjoyed her character, and you will just admire the talent of this young lady. Kim Last and Taki added the necessary color to the characters as the two were a perfect inclusion to this talented and bubbly cast.

Overall,   Banal is a neatly executed horror picture with Blair Witch vibes all over it. Unexpectedly great in technical aspects and creepy shooting locations. You also got a tremendous set of stars to elevate the material and provide the audience a thrilling and exciting horror picture you shouldn't want to miss on the big screen.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 8.5 out of 10 stars
