Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Movie Review)
By: Matt Suzara
The film opens with dark wizard Grindelwald escaping custody and tries to lure more followers under his wing to raise pure-blood wizards to rule all non-magical beings. To prevent this all from happening, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) sends his favorite student, Newt (Eddie Redmayne) to Paris and embarks to a journey that will test his skill and find the truest wizards to aid his side against the dangers of the dark magic.
The magical journey continues as the sequel for Fantastic Beasts arrives in cinemas with a gallant effort to lure all the Harry Potter to experience the same vibe we all felt before. However, the film tries to hard in giving that same atmosphere resulting to a much complicated situation. It is hard to keep track with all the characters on-site and throwing in different chunks of information that is really difficult to ingest.
What made the sequel a less bore is the fact that they actually provided slick visuals that is such a treat to the eyes, especially when you're watching it on 3D in a huge IMAX screen. You'll feel the magic and colorful effects that feels so alive right in front of you. There are some new fluffy beasts that will instantly get your attention.
Aside from the visuals, the movie also capitalized with its tremendous set of stars who are actually giving all they've got to carry the film on their backs. Johnny Depp is really effective as Gellert Grindelwald as his performance was steadily sharp throughout. As a dark wizard, he seems to play it effortlessly and doesn't feel that he is taking away the spotlight from the real star. Eddie Redmayne continues to impress and fill Newt Scamander with charm and wit while Jude Law was remarkable as Albus Dumbledore. The supporting casts also helped a lot with Dan Folger, Ezra Miller and Katherine Waterston all providing the spark that the film needs.
Overall, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald introduces the fans to a much deeper story line that is both appealing and exhausting at times. This wizardry franchise has a lot more to offer but needs to bring back the same intensity and charisma of the Harry Potter franchise before it's too late.
