Searching: Movie Review
Searching is all about a widowed father, David Kim (John Cho), who is trying to find his only daughter, Margot (Michelle La), who went missing after a group study. David tries to trace the whereabouts of her daughter but what will he find some clues and help the police to find her in time.
The opening minutes of the film was already powerful by all means and assures you that this was just a glamorous wrapper of a gift sitting on top of the table waiting to be opened. As the story progress, you definitely be hooked and amazed with all the things happening on the screen. It features a wide variety of POVs and doubles the effort in bringing life to this impressive technique. It has been used earlier this year in the Unfriended sequel but Searching is much more effective in providing the thrill and excitement throughout.
It feels like you are a part of the search team as you can feel the agony of the main character who lost his daughter. But what we really like about in this film is the brilliance in setting up those small details and clues that creates the tension. You'll feel that this is already the answer to the mystery, but the film diverts it with twists that you never expected to happen. The jumping of platforms also was neatly done, and I can't imagine how all these ideas were compressed as a whole.
Director Aneesh Chaganty guarantees that the viewers will have a hard time guessing what would happen next and to predict the mystery is just simply a long shot. He also made sure that the actors would respond well to the challenge as he maximized their skills to make the entire thing riveting and would definitely leave a mark to its audience.
The cast was simply mesmerizing and believable from start to finish. We all knew John Cho as an effective comedy actor but this time around, he shows his strengths and versatility. This might be his best performance yet, and I really hope he earns a recognition anytime soon. He is supported by Debra Messing who did a remarkable job as Detective Rosemary Vick and Sara Sohn had her moments to shine even with a small-screen time. You also have Michelle La and Joseph Lee to complete the outstanding set of stars.
Overall, Searching can easily be tagged as one of the best films released this year. It looks simple but deep inside its roots is an absorbing nightmare that will leave you captivated until the end.
