Skyscraper: Movie Review
Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) is a former FBI agent who loses his leg in a hostage and rescue mission. Ten years later, he is now a dad of two kids and a loving husband to Sarah (Neve Campbell) a surgeon, who stitched him up. Determined to forget all his painful experiences in past, Will takes a job designing a special security system for The Pearl, the tallest skyscraper in the world owned by Zhao Long Ji (Chin Han). However, when the skyscraper starts to burst out in flames and a criminal organization tries to set him up, Will must now find a way to clear his name and save his family before its too late.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the highest paid actors last year, and probably the most charismatic lead star that you can actually wish for. He is the known as the Peoples Champ in wrestling and has become the most popular star when he decided to take his talents to Hollywood. However, critics often censure the choices he makes when accepting a role as he chooses films that are powered by heavy CG effects with crazy story lines. Still, Dwayne Johnson managed to carry those films into success and yes, count Skyscraper in too.
Skyscraper didn't waste any precious minute getting the audience pumped up and went straight into the action. The adrenaline was already injected all the way to the opening minutes and didn't let go of the gas pedal up to the closing credits. It is just simply exciting and thrilling at the same time as there are a lot of nerve-racking moments that you actually need to hold on to your breath and squeeze the tub of the popcorn. It is definitely another serving of The Rock's exhilarating stunts and gimmick that he still sells even it always has a touch of impossibility.
The film plays tribute to classic hardcore action films like Die Hard where all the possibilities can happen throughout, and surprises are thrown from different directions. It doesn't need to have a serious plot in order to generate the fun and thrills and went pretty straight to the point. Dwayne Johnson is actually the focal point to sell this entire thing but his supporting cast also did a great job handling their roles with Scream's star Neve Campbell leading the charge.
Overall, Skyscraper is a typical popcorn Blockbuster filled with ridiculous but thrilling sequences to give the viewers an exciting and enjoyable cinematic experience. It is best to be seen on the big screen as you can feel the intensity and center of the action while taking a sip of your favorite soda.
