Si Chedeng at Si Apple: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Chedeng (Gloria Diaz) is a 66-year-old retired principal who spent mostly of her days by taking care of her sick husband at home. Unfortunately, her husband passed away and soon announces to her children that she is a lesbian. Her best friend Apple (Elizabeth Oropesa) is a high-spirited woman who suffers everyday to the hands of her abusive husband. Things get rough when Apple decides to fight back and accidentally kills his spouse. With the help of Chedeng, the two decided to get rid of the body, and embark to an unforgettable journey of their lifetime.

From the writers of Patay na si Hesus and Birdshot (Fatrick Tabada and Rae Red) brings us another colorful comedy flick that you shouldn't miss on the big screen. Si Chedeng at Si Apple is a one-of-a-kind road-trip adventure with shades of dark humor that keeps the audience entertained for the whole duration of the film. What I really liked about Tabada's work is that he does not fabricate his comedy and goes on straight to the point. He made sure that the film would be memorable enough and enjoyable as much as possible. You can see the traces of Patay na Si Hesus style of comedy, but they leveled up the entire thing and came up with fresh new ideas on how to make the viewers laugh their hearts out.

I also loved the fact that they choose Ms. Gloria Diaz and Elizabeth Oropesa in this project. I never though that these two veterans can actually do eccentric roles and nails every comedy touch perfectly. It is nice to see them working hard but acted naturally while doing their respective characters. They were just on the spot and never let their guard on down the whole duration of the film. Their chemistry was also palpable, and the two was surrounded with a great set of supporting cast.

Overall, Si Chedeng at Si Apple has one major objective - to make its viewers happy by leaving the cinema with a huge smile in their faces. They are obviously successful in hitting that goal, and I can't wait for these guys to start their new project.
