Baby Driver: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a young and talented getaway driver who works for a crime boss Doc (Kevin Spacey) in order to pay his debts. Doc is the mastermind of the heist while he hires some thugs to do the heist for him. When Baby finally paid all his debt, he wants to get out and settles for a clean job. From there she meets a beautiful waitress Deborah (Lily James) and immediately falls in love with her. However, their love story is in jeopardy as his mobster team needs him for another big heist job.

When I saw the first six minutes of the film released by Columbia Pictures on Youtube all I can say was "WTF" this is a freaking cool film. I was already mesmerized with the opening minutes as the film wasted no time in providing a stylish heist chase. Thankfully, I don't need to wait longer as we were able to watch Baby Driver's press screening last night. It was simply amazing from start to finish.

The film is solidly mixed with magnificent car chases and boosted with a killer soundtrack. Director Edgar Wright pulled another rabbit out of his hat as he tries a new recipe for the viewers to feel a different attack during their cinematic experience. With Guardians of the Galaxy having an awesome mix tape - Baby Driver doubles it up introducing a list of their own. No track is wasted as every single beat jump starts the scenes, especially when Baby starts to push the gas pedal.

As for the cast, Ansel Elgort perfectly suits Baby's character. It is easy to enjoy Elgort's role, especially behind the wheels doing every impossible turn to escape the cops. He clearly excels his acting and finally an action film that can showcase his talent. It is also a good thing that he is surrounded by a great list of supporting characters. From Jamie Foxx's psycho character to the duo of Jon Hamm and Eina Gonzalez that electrifies the screen plus Lily James providing good chemistry with our likable protagonist.

Overall, Baby Driver is a fast-paced action thriller mixed with a classy soundtrack to die for. Ansel Elgort reveals himself as a dynamic lead. All you need is one killer track and Baby Drivers give you a dozen of it.
